Alvaro "Al" DeAndrade Jr., 88, of Lincoln passed away peacefully on April 3rd. He was the beloved husband of Roberta (Joseph) DeAndrade for 63 years. Al and Roberta met on their first day of college and have been together ever since.
Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Alvaro DeAndrade Sr. and Fernanda (Gomes) DeAndrade.
Al was a teacher in Central Falls for 31 years. He helped organize the Central Falls Teachers Union in 1962 and served as President from 1964 until 1992. He served as the Vice-President of The Rhode Island Federation of Teachers Union from 1968–1992.
Al played the trumpet professionally from the age of 9 and served as the Vice-President of the Providence Federation of Musicians from 1990 until his death.
Al is remembered by many for the Cavalcade of Bands which he has been coordinating since 1995. At the time of his death he was putting the finishing touches on the May 2025 Cavalcade. Al graduated from Central Falls High School in 1955 and Rhode Island College in 1959. In 2020 Al was inducted into the Central Falls High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the basketball teams of 1954 and 1955. Al was inducted into the Rhode Island College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 as a member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams from 1955-1959. Al continued to play basketball until he was 81 and softball and golf until his mid 80s.
In addition to his wife, Al is survived by his daughter Alyssa DeAndrade of Lincoln and her partner Kerra McNally and his son Brian DeAndrade of Lincoln. He is survived by his sister Dorothy (DeAndrade) Brennan and his brother Richard DeAndrade, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Vincent DeAndrade.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, April 10th from 4:00 - 7:00pm at Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave., Lincoln. His funeral will begin at 10:00am on Friday, April 11th at Keefe Funeral Home, followed by a funeral home service at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Al’s name to: HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center or the Providence Federation of Musicians.
